Internal documents on market strategy have shown this a million times -- to them, we will buy it no matter what.

That is why they feed us this garbage about revolutionary materials and increased detail; it isn't for us, it's to sucker in the new people who don't know any better.Rob Walkerhttp://www.evildice40k.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3932148462348486064.post-12220586447433821272011-05-21T01:03:55.366-04:002011-05-21T01:03:55.366-04:00Somewhere, someone thinks this was a great idea. Because right now..I just don't see how this is making Games Workshop ANY friends at all. Protecting their Distro line..sure but other than the Managers of GW Brick and Mortar Stores I don't think anyone is doing a happy dance over any of this.Hexeterhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17733225218907115111noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3932148462348486064.post-86308617525385716032011-05-18T18:23:42.080-04:002011-05-18T18:23:42.080-04:00There are several companies producing minatures wa...There are several companies producing minatures wargames, and one of GW's biggest advantages over their competitors is marketshare. With GW games it's easier to find an opponent - for example gamedays at a local store. Additionally GW tournaments are bigger and easier to find. And then there are the promotional synergies of books and videogames and other licensed merchandise. However, as GW raise prices, some customers will leave the hobby and more will migrate to lower cost competitors. GW are destroying their own greatest competitive advantage.

I can already see it happening with Warmarchine and other minature games getting more attention. I don't think the hobby will die. But it is certainly possible that GW will die, and be replaced by a smarter competitor.Dennishttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04806221647407003219noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3932148462348486064.post-90953239406019462522011-05-17T20:51:56.572-04:002011-05-17T20:51:56.572-04:00GW is shooting themselves in the foot with the pri...GW is shooting themselves in the foot with the price hike to their "Finecast" models and with their "Regional Protection" scheme.

GW has competitors now. Competitors that are just waiting to gobble up GW customers who are tired of overpaying for plastic models. Not only does GW have competitors now, who also have a robust product line and just as well detailed models, they also have a price advantage. With the release of the new codexes, with the points/model being less, it takes more models to make an army. This means you need more plastic to make up an army, thus costing more money to get that army. With most of GW's competitors running armies that require less models to form a functioning army, it costs lest to start up their armies.

And for that reason, this is how GW will die. For most of the current generation of tabletop gamers, we have the luxury of having well formed armies built over the years when GW's prices were reasonible. Having been in the hobby for many years, I've purchased my armies (yes, more than one) at a time when GW's prices were reasonible and when I was actually able to walk into a GW store and say, "I have $500 to spend, if I get that much product, can you give me a bulk discount", which they were more than willing to give me (20% discounts at a GW store... have you ever heard of that now?). Try doing that nowadays. With the exception of a model here or there, or when a new model gets released, most current GW gamers have all the models they need.

These price increases for me means that I will not start up any new armies. As much as I like the detail and look at the Grey Knights army, I can not justify in my limited budget to buy this new army. Or for that matter, any of the other armies that GW produces. I will only stick with the armies that I have and maybe... maybe, expand them when their new codexes come out. So, in effect, GW has lost my sales for now.

But for GW to survive, they have to pull in new gamers to the hobby; people who don't have established armies. They have to pull in the 14yo's who are just getting to the age to appreciate the hobby. So, if i'm a 14yo kid, with limited funds (hey, an allowance can only go so far) and i'm going to start into the hobby (if you can pry the Xbox controller out of my hand first), who do you think I'm going to go with... a company that has lower prices and requires fewer models to actually have a functioning army, or with a company that has high prices and requires a greater number of models to start playing???

Ya, the answer is pretty simple. GW's pricing and codex scheme will dry up their source of cash, young kids. It's just becoming to expensive to start and maintain as GW army.

And, couple with the fact that the source of most entertainment now is internet and gaming related for kids, GW is going to have an even harder time attracting new bodies to their hobby.

There is only so much blood that can be wrung from a stone and GW has sucked out the last drops from me.MonkeyLeaderhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12786937355300152486noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3932148462348486064.post-14430116319410879692011-05-17T20:49:54.112-04:002011-05-17T20:49:54.112-04:00This comment has been removed by the author.MonkeyLeaderhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12786937355300152486noreply@blogger.com
